Plagiarism vs AI detection: copied from where, versus written by what
Plagiarism detection and AI detection answer two different questions. A plagiarism checker asks: does this text match something that already exists? An AI detector asks: does this text look like something a language model would produce? A passage can fail one and pass the other in any combination. The confusion is understandable. The best known plagiarism vendors added AI detection to the same dashboard, so a student sees one report with two percentages and reads them as one thing. They are not. A plagiarism match is evidence: here is the source, here is the overlap. An AI score is an estimate: this text has a texture we associate with machines. One can be checked by opening the source. The other cannot be checked at all.
How a plagiarism checker works
It breaks your text into overlapping word runs, searches a large index of web pages, journals and previously submitted work for the same runs, and reports matches with their sources. It is a lookup. If the source is not in the index, the match is not found; if a phrase is common, it is found everywhere and flagged as noise. Quoted material with citations is a match too, which is why every report needs a human to read it.
How an AI detector works
It does not search anything. It measures the text itself: sentence-length variance, word predictability, stock-phrase density, opener repetition and the rest of the signals, then converts them into a score. There is no source to open, because the claim is not "this came from there" but "this is shaped like machine output". That is why an AI verdict can never be confirmed the way a plagiarism match can.
Four cases that show the difference
- Copied from Wikipedia, word for word: plagiarism yes, AI usually no.
- Written by a model on a fresh topic: plagiarism no, AI likely yes.
- Written by a careful non-native student in formal English: plagiarism no, AI sometimes wrongly yes.
- A model asked to rewrite a Wikipedia article: possibly both, depending on how much it changed.
What this means in practice
If you are a student, cite your sources and run the plagiarism checker when your institution uses one; that report is about attribution. Run the AI detector separately to see whether your own writing reads flat; that report is about style. If you are assessing someone else's work, treat a plagiarism match as evidence to discuss and an AI score as a prompt to ask questions, never as a finding on its own.
Common questions
Does humanizing text remove plagiarism?
No. Humanizing changes wording and rhythm, and a plagiarism checker may or may not still match the source, but the ethical problem is unchanged. Copied ideas need a citation regardless of wording. Our Acceptable Use Policy is explicit about this.
Can a text be flagged for AI and plagiarism at the same time?
Yes. A model rewriting an existing source can produce text that matches the source in places and carries machine texture throughout. The two checks are independent.
Is the Humanize 360 plagiarism checker free?
No. It is paid per use because every scan queries an external index. The AI detector is free because it runs entirely on our own code.
Which check should a teacher trust more?
