Paraphrasing: what it means and how it differs from humanizing

Paraphrasing is restating something in your own words while keeping the meaning. It is the oldest skill in the writing trade: you read a source, understand it, close the book and explain it as you would to a friend. Paraphrasing tools automate the wording part. Humanize 360 offers a free paraphraser at /paraphraser, and this page explains where it fits next to the humanizer, because people search for one when they need the other.

A short example. Source: "The committee postponed the decision until the audit report was available." A paraphrase: "The committee delayed its decision until it had the audit report." Same meaning, new wording, same structure. Now compare a humanized version of a model-written paragraph: sentences change length, an opener disappears, a stock phrase is replaced by the plain point. The paraphraser swaps words. The humanizer changes shape.

When paraphrasing is the right tool

When you actually need the humanizer

If a draft came out of a language model, paraphrasing it sentence by sentence leaves the machine shape intact: even sentence lengths, "Furthermore" at the top of every paragraph, a rule-of-three in every second line. The detector will still see it. Run the text through /ai-detector first. Below 45, go to the humanizer on the home page and pick a mode. Between 45 and 70, the paraphraser with a second pass is often enough.

The line paraphrasing does not cross

Paraphrasing a source without citing it is still plagiarism, whatever tool produced the wording. Every academic style guide says so. Our Ethics Statement at /ethics and the Acceptable Use Policy at /acceptable-use follow the same principle: the tool helps you write, it does not remove the obligation to credit. A paraphrase is yours in wording; the idea still belongs to whoever had it.

How the tools are built

Both the paraphraser and the humanizer are our own code. Nothing you paste goes to a third-party model, anonymous runs are discarded after the response and re-running gives a different result because the seed changes. The paraphraser has its own free allowance, separate from the humanizer, so trying it costs nothing.

Common questions

Is paraphrasing the same as rewording?

In everyday use, yes. Rewording usually means changing individual words; paraphrasing can also reorder clauses. Our /rewording-tool and /paraphraser overlap, with the paraphraser making slightly larger changes.

Will a paraphrased AI draft read human?

Often not. Paraphrasing keeps sentence rhythm and structure, and those are the main things detectors measure. Check with the detector; if the score stays low, use the humanizer instead.

Does paraphrasing a source avoid plagiarism?

Only with a citation. Restating an idea in new words without crediting its author is plagiarism in every academic code we know of. Cite the source in both cases.

Can I paraphrase for free?

Yes. The paraphraser at /paraphraser runs on the same free allowance model: 300 words per run, three runs a day, no account required.
