Register: matching the formality of your writing to its reader
Register is the variety of language a writer chooses for a situation: how formal, how technical, how personal. A tax notice, a lab report, a product review and a message to a friend are four registers, and a competent writer moves between them without thinking. Language models are less sure-footed. They default to a polished, mid-formal register and, when pushed towards casual, often produce a formal skeleton wearing contractions. Humanize 360 treats register as a setting: four of the eight modes exist mainly to fix it.
Consider the same news in two registers. Formal: "The organization regrets to inform stakeholders that the scheduled maintenance window has been extended." Casual: "Sorry, the maintenance is taking longer than we said." Both are correct. Neither is better. A model asked for casual will often write "We regret that the maintenance is taking longer than anticipated, and we appreciate your patience!", which is neither register and reads machine for exactly that reason.
What sets a register
- Contraction rate: "do not" and "it is" versus "don't" and "it's".
- Vocabulary: "purchase" or "buy", "commence" or "start", "utilize" or "use".
- Sentence length and structure: subordinate clauses and passive voice versus short active sentences.
- Address: "the customer" versus "you", "one" versus "we".
- Punctuation habits: semicolons and colons in formal prose, dashes and fragments in casual.
How register shows up in detection
Two of the eleven Human Score signals are almost pure register measures: contraction rate and tell-word ratio. Two more, transition-word overuse and stock-phrase density, rise sharply in the mid-formal register models prefer. A text that is consistently formal can score human; a text that mixes formal vocabulary with casual punctuation, or that hedges every sentence with "it is important to note", tends not to. Mismatch, not formality, is the tell.

- Academic: formal, no contractions, citations and numbers protected, sentence variety kept.
- Formal: business or official prose, no contractions, plainer than Academic.
- Casual: contractions, direct address, shorter sentences, no stock hedges.
- Simple: plain words and short sentences for general readers, neutral formality.
- Standard, Flowing, Expand, Shorten: keep whatever register the input already has.
